WHAT IS TYPE 1 DIABETES?
Type 1 diabetes is an AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE. The immune system is supposed to protect us from infection and disease. It does this by creating antibodies that attack anything bad that comes into our body. With Type 1 diabetes, the body made a mistake and attacked the cells in our pancreas that make insulin (Beta Cells). This leads to the body making little to no insulin from the inside, so the only treatment is to provide insulin from the outside.
What does insulin do?
When we eat food that contains carbohydrates, it gets broken down into sugar (glucose). That sugar goes into the blood stream, and insulin is the only key that can unlock all of our cells so that this sugar (glucose) can go in and be used for ENERGY.
